The IT System Administrator is a fully competent professional who, aligned with the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework, uses IT Service Management (ITSM) to support and manage systems. This position utilizes advanced knowledge and experience to accomplish tasks requiring out the box thinking and an understanding of IT concepts. This position strives to improve the systems this position supports through learning and understanding agency business needs, interacting with end users and attending state wide technical groups.

This position provides system administration and IT support for multiple agency-wide IT systems, services and applications. As the subject matter expert (SME) of multiple agency wide systems, they are the go to person for IT customer support staff and work with senior IT staff to enhance and coordinate IT services

The Information Services (IS) unit resides within the Operations Division of the Department of Commerce (Commerce) and provides centralized Information Technology (IT) services to all of Commerce. The IS unit is divided into two teams, Operations and Applications. This position resides within the Operations team, reporting to the IS Manager (Infrastructure/Security/Operations).

Duties

The IT System Administrator maintains all aspects of the systems and services they support while adhering to Washington State and Agency standards, policies and industry best practices. Help from senior staff may be required from time to time, but this position can usually perform independently. This position learns quickly, continuously learns new technology and backs up other system administrators. Here are some of the duties performed in this role.

Administers and maintains IT systems, services and applications as a technically competent IT professional

  • Leads projects to upgrade systems, services and applications this position supports.
  • Resolves tier 2 and 3 requests related to assigned systems
  • Go to person for the systems this position manages as the subject matter expert.
  • Coordinates with vendor and customers then performs updates and upgrades using ITIL change management.
  • Monitor server health, usage, performance and availability using tools such as Windows Server logs, Windows Performance Monitor, System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Nagios, etc.
  • Monitors system security, reporting any anomalies to IT security and senior staff.
  • Monitors systems for performance and availability and resolves issues before they become problems for end users and reports.
  • Makes sure systems, services and applications are backed up with the ability to restore user data, system configurations and entire system.
  • Create PowerShell and other scripts to manage and automate tasks in systems and applications administered by this position.
  • Resolves problems and restores systems to service using IT knowledge and concepts to identifying and address the root cause of issues. May require researching multiple sources and deviating from routine solutions.
  • Create and document procedures, system configuration, network flow and firewall ports diagrams in Visio and other system management tools to facilitate management of the service.
  • Creates procedures for customer support to provide basic support such as adding and removing users and basic troubleshooting of common end user problems.
  • Integrate systems, services, and applications into central statewide systems such as Azure active directory identity management and Secure Access Washington (SAW).

IT Project Management and Support

  • Lead by assigning, instructing, and checking the work of others related to both projects and the systems managed by this position.
  • Manage the agency wide deployment of systems and services this position is assigned by creating technical project plans working with vendors, other IT co-workers and key division staff throughout the agency.
  • Supports project efforts which vary in scope from program/unit to agency wide by delivery of assigned project tasks necessary for successful, on time, project completion.

Qualifications

Required Education, Experience or Certifications

Four years of professional information technology system administration experience troubleshooting, installing, backing up and maintaining server systems such as Backup, VMware, SAN, NAS, File, Print, IIS, SQL, GIS, WSUS, Email, Active Directory/Azure, Deployment (SCCM), M365, Monitoring, etc.

AND

Bachelor’s Degree; (OR)

Associate’s Degree and two years of additional professional IT experience; (OR)

Four years of additional professional IT experience.

One year or more of PowerShell Experience

Desirable/Preferred Education, Experience or Certifications

  • CompTIA Certificates such as A+, Network+, Security+, and/or Cloud Essentials.
  • Microsoft Certifications such as M365, Azure, Endpoint Management, SCCM, Intune, IIS, SQL, SharePoint, Servers and Cloud Applications.
  • ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) Certification

Work Location is in Olympia, WA

During the first 6 months, person will be required to work in the Olympia office full time M-F, 8am-5pm. After that you will work with your supervisor to identify an appropriate work schedule and balance. However, it is anticipated that interviews for this position will be held using virtual videoconferencing.
