Department Summary

Located in Denton, Texas and close to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the University of North Texas is a Carnegie Tier-One research institution and a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving (HSI) and Minority-Serving Institution (MSI). We offer extensive teaching support through the Center for Learning Experimentation, Application and Research (CLEAR).

We offer fully accredited degrees from the bachelor to doctoral levels and are home to the world’s first jazz studies degree program. Faculty include internationally acclaimed artists and scholars in composition, conducting, ethnomusicology, music education, music entrepreneurship, musicology, music theory, performance, performing arts health, and popular/commercial music. The college presents more than 1,100 concerts, lectures, recitals, and master classes annually. UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Summary

The University of North Texas College of Music and the Division of Music History, Theory and Ethnomusicology invite applications for a continuing lecturer or senior lecturer who has demonstrated expertise in the pedagogy of music history. The position will be a three-year renewable appointment that carries a teaching load of six courses per year and has the potential for promotion within the rank classification. We are a collegial group of scholars who seek to further enhance our expertise in the pedagogy of music history.

The candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses to both music-major and non-major students, mentor graduate students in their teaching, and design courses using best practices in pedagogy.

Duties will include:

  • Teaching: teach and develop courses for undergraduate music majors and non-majors; teach undergraduate seminars to our Bachelor of Arts in Critical Studies in Music and Society students; mentor graduate teaching assistants and fellows.
  • Service: participate on divisional/college/university committees; serve on committees and boards of appropriate professional organizations; perform other duties as assigned by the Division and/or College.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Musicology or another relevant discipline at time of appointment
  • For senior lecturer rank: three years of demonstrated excellence in full-time college-level teaching (candidates who do not meet this criterion will be considered for the lecturer rank)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated teaching ability, as indicated by teaching experience, positive student evaluations, teaching awards, and other evidence of teaching success
  • Potential for effectively teaching students from diverse concentrations and backgrounds
  • Record of developing innovative courses in music history and music-history pedagogy
  • Knowledge and application of current trends and best practices in the pedagogy of music history
  • Experience mentoring graduate teaching assistants and teaching fellows
  • Experience developing and teaching asynchronous online courses
