POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under moderate supervision, perform research work in medical and related technical projects aimed at exploring the role of prion protein and ¿-synuclein in the brain and the eye. A variety of experimental systems will be used to explore these questions, including primary and transformed cell lines, and human and bovine tissue. The projects involve techniques such as cell culture, Immunoblotting, and immunohisto-chemistry.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Perform research work in medical and related technical areas involves use of lab skills. This includes culture cells, perform Western blots of samples to detect specific proteins, and immunohistochemistry of tissue sections. Compile and analyze the data obtained. Some of the experiments will involve dissection of bovine, pig, and human eye. (50%)
- Maintain test equipment utilized in the experiments. Aid in managing samples, including tissue collection, processing and accurately recording data associated with samples and research. (12%)
- Record results for a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments by using software, such as Graphpad Prism, or Excel. (12%)
- Maintain records of experiments. Keep detailed and organized records of experiments, protocols, and procedures. Organize shipment of samples from or to the laboratory. Maintain certification and servicing of laboratory equipment. (9%)
- Order general laboratory supplies and maintain inventory. (9%)
- Conduct analysis of samples. Conduct and record results of a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments such as Western blots, immunohistochemistry, etc. Keep a copy of the protocol used for each experiment and store the data such as fluorograms and immunostained slides under appropriate conditions in the lab. (6%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Perform assigned duties. (1%)
- Prepare solutions, buffers, media, and maintain liquid nitrogen tanks, CO2 tanks, and incubators etc. (1%).
CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow.
University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information.
External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.
Students: Contact with student employees to exchange information.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.
QUALIFICAITONS
Bachelor of science degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS * Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts and procedures in biology.
Has familiarity with Qualtrics software * Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform experiments.
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
- Ability to meet consistent attendance.
- Ability to interact with colleagues and supervisor face to face.
- Familiarity with English language and verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain consistent attendance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Will work indoors in general laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde, biohazards such as human, pig, and bovine tissue and blood. No travel or necessary overtime.
