The American Language and Culture Center (ALCC), within International Affairs at Southern Utah University (SUU), invites applications for a full-time, benefited ALCC Lecturer. This is a non-tenure track, 11-month contract teaching position without scholarly responsibilities.

ALCC Lecturers support the mission of the ALCC in helping students improve their academic English proficiency prior to and after admission to a degree-seeking program at Southern Utah University (SUU). ALCC Lecturers also promote the interests and needs of ESL students to the SUU community and educate SUU faculty and staff on methods that make learning more accessible for ESL students.

ALCC Lecturers teach 12 credits each semester (6 credits per 6-week term) of Intensive English Program (IEP) courses. They may also teach other English as a Second Language (ESL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) courses as assigned by the ALCC Director.

Duties and Responsibilities: * The primary focus of ALCC Lecturers is teaching.

  • Lecturers prepare syllabi with a focus on outcomes-based learning, teach using a variety of effective language learning methods, hold regular office hours, and respond to students in a constructive, supportive manner.
  • ALCC Lecturers attend ALCC faculty meetings and participate in ongoing professional development.
  • They contribute to the ALCC community of learning by assisting colleagues and exchanging effective teaching strategies.
  • ALCC Lecturers also have one or more primary areas of administrative responsibilities, such as assessment, research, tutoring, technology, curriculum, activities, or other duties as assigned by the ALCC Director.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Required Qualifications: * Completed degree in Master of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field.

Demonstrated teaching success in an ESL or EFL program at the university level. * Familiarity with current teaching and assessment practices in the field of second language learning.

  • Ability and willingness to support students from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Evidence of a high degree of fluency and accuracy in all aspects of spoken and written English.
  • Familiarity with Canvas or other online learning management systems.

Collegial and collaborative attitude toward all University students, faculty, and staff, and members of the local community. * Flexibility to adapt to a variety of teaching assignments, without a textbook-driven curriculum, as needed depending on student enrollment.

  • Interest and commitment toward personal and departmental professional development.

In accordance with Utah State Code 53B-1-110, appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful passing of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications: * Proficiency in a second language.

  • Experience teaching or living abroad.
  • Experience with teacher supervision and program administration.
  • Experience teaching TESOL courses.
  • Experience with curriculum development and online language teaching.
  • Experience with adult ESL community education programs.
  • Experience training and supervising tutors for an ESL program.
  • Certification or training in ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) assessment.
  • Candidates who have completed a PhD or EdD in Applied Linguistics,
  • Language Education, or related field are also encouraged to apply.
