The Consumer Fraud Unit of the Consumer Protection Section is seeking an experienced attorney to join a hardworking and creative team of professionals protecting consumer rights in Colorado. Colorado recently enacted a new privacy law, and this position will help implement that law, including defining its parameters through rulemaking, public education, and enforcement. In addition to joining an energetic team, this is a unique opportunity to work for a nationally-recognized leader in antitrust and consumer protection law-Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser. The ideal candidate will have enforcement experience and a strong background or interest in privacy and cybersecurity. This position is a great opportunity to help expand the Consumer Fraud Unit’s cybersecurity and privacy practice, and the successful candidate will help lead the Attorney General’s advocacy for the privacy rights of Coloradans.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Consumer Fraud Unit is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and experienced attorney with an enforcement background and a strong interest or background in privacy and cybersecurity. This attorney will help build the Unit’s cybersecurity and privacy practice. The primary role for this attorney will be to help lead the implementation of Colorado’s newly enacted Colorado Privacy Act and to enforce Colorado Cybersecurity Breach laws. Those efforts will be accomplished through public education, rulemaking, and enforcement. This position will also participate in national efforts focused on cyber security, data protection, and privacy issues.

An Assistant Attorney General in the Consumer Fraud Unit will have the opportunity to handle a caseload and independently conduct investigations and enforcement actions, while supervising paralegals and staff. Although the Consumer Fraud Unit seeks self-driven and motivated applicants, the individual who will succeed in the position is a team player who enjoys collaborating with colleagues to achieve the best results for Colorado consumers.

We may fill more than one position from this recruitment that focuses on implementing Colorado’s new Consumer Privacy Act. One position would focus on administrative law, rulemaking, and policy issues and the other would focus on enforcement issues.WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

At a minimum, applicants must:

  • Be admitted to the Colorado bar or be clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar and be in good standing at the time of application. Candidates eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar will be required to submit proof of their completed application before the first day of employment.

Ideal candidates will have some, or all, of the following skills and attributes:

  • Deep background in privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, and consumer protection law, with subject matter expertise in consumer protection investigations and litigation;
  • Interest in how technology and networks work, and capable of learning new technologies, as well as deploying technical tools to advance investigations.
  • Strong complex litigation experience in both federal and state court and the ability to effectively handle all aspects of litigation;
  • Rulemaking experience;
  • Experience in leading investigations;
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to work on complex issues;
  • Strong research and writing skills and a keen attention to detail;
  • Ability to creatively solve problems through developing practical and imaginative solutions;
  • Experience in negotiating settlements and working with opposing counsel;
  • Ability to resiliently handle stress and demonstrate flexibility with changing circumstances;
  • Be an effective and responsive communicator;
  • Capable of independently managing a full workload;
  • Goal-oriented and a self-starter who is comfortable working both independently and collaboratively;
  • Shows a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and
  • Passionate and enthusiastic about having a career in consumer protection law and working on behalf of Colorado consumers.
