SUMMARY: The Legal Department at The Safe Center provides direct comprehensive legal representation and advocacy to low–income and indigent victims and survivors of domestic/dating violence, rape/sexual abuse, stalking, trafficking, and elder abuse in family offense proceedings, paternity, custody/visitation cases, child/spousal support, divorces, immigration proceedings, and other legal matters arising out of the abuse. The bi-lingual legal assistant works within the Legal Department in helping to work with domestic violence and rape/sexual assault victims in Nassau County. The bi-lingual legal assistant must have a demonstrated commitment to domestic violence, victims’ rights and/or public interest.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with the attorneys, paralegals, pro bono volunteers, student interns and other Agency employees;
- Handles intakes and referrals for clients;
- Assists the Legal Director in scheduling appointments;
- Maintains court and attorney calendars;
- Collects reports, and maintains statistical information;
- Coordinates intern and volunteer schedules;
- Assists in the organization and planning of trainings;
- Coordinates, prioritizes, and assigns intern and volunteer workflow;
- Orders and maintains legal office supplies;
- Scans all client correspondence, accordingly distributes and files into client computer files;
- Arranges, coordinates, and schedules monthly Legal Question and Answer Programs;
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates Degree, paralegal certification or relevant experience required
- Matrimonial and family law experience required
- Domestic Violence and/or Rape Sexual Assault experience preferred
- Proficient with Office365 and Abacus preferred
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills preferred
- English and Spanish speaking preferred
- Must be fully vaccinated for COVID19 and must show vaccination card. Exemptions will be reviewed.
HOURS, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
- Full-Time, Exempt, 35 hours per week 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. (may need to flex time to accommodate program needs);
- Benefits: Health and dental insurance, paid vacation, personal and sick days;
- Mileage reimbursement for agency related travel.
