NOTE: Qualified applicants will be required to take an online exam. Performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, alteration and repair of wooden articles and structures; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the journey-level class in the Carpentry series. This class differs from that of the Carpenter Helper in that the Carpenter I performs skilled rough and finished carpentry work in the construction, alteration and repair of all types of wooden articles and structures, including cabinet carpentry work, whereas the Carpenter Helper works under the supervision of a skilled carpenter and performs a variety of manual tasks incidental to the work of carpenters or performs routine carpentry work requiring the application of the basic elements of the trade.
This class differs from that of Carpenter II in that the Carpenter I performs skilled carpentry work and may supervise carpenters or helpers from time to time; whereas the Carpenter II supervises carpenters, helpers and others and participates in the construction, alteration and repair of wooden articles and structures.
Examples of Duties
The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
- Lays out, cuts, fits and assembles concrete forms, framework, ceilings, floors, walls, partitions, stairways, windows, doors, interior and exterior trim and other similar carpentry work;
- Removes and replaces flooring, ceilings, partitions, roofs or other portions of wooden structures damaged or destroyed by termites, wet or dry rot, or other causes;
- Installs glass panes in doors and windows;
- Installs and repairs hardware such as locks, door stops, hinges and door knobs;
- Lays out, saws, fits, assembles and finishes cabinets, filing cases, chairs, counters or desks;
- Operates woodworking machinery such as sanders, planers, joiners, handsaws, routers, mortises, wood lathes, and drill presses in connection with carpentry work;
- Reads blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine materials needed;
- May assign tasks to other carpenters and supervise the work of helpers;
- May perform work in other building trades such as painting, plumbing, electrical and masonry when not engaged in carpentry work.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and successful completion of apprenticeship training or four years of experience in carpentry work under a journey-level carpenter.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3) (as required by specific position).
Knowledge of: practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the carpentry trade; qualities, uses, and adaptability of various woods; pertinent building codes; occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; basic techniques in other building trades.
Ability to: operate a variety of woodworking machines and use the tools of the trade; read, interpret and work from plans, blue-prints, sketches, and working drawings; estimate labor and material requirements; rig and work form scaffolds and other high or difficult vantage points; plan assignments and direct the work of others; give and follow oral and written instructions; and perform routine painting, masonry and minor plumbing and electrical work.

The above examination is being given on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.

Pre-Employment/Post-Offer Drug Screening Test: All applicants, who will enter a safety sensitive position or certain designated categories that the Personnel Services Director has established or who are required by law to be drug tested must pass a pre-employment/post-offer drug screening test as a condition of employment. Vacation
Eligible employees earn up to 21 days of vacation per year, with a maximum year-to-year carry over of 90 days. Eligibility to accrue vacation begins with the first work day.

Deferred Compensation Plan
Eligible employees may participate in the Island Savings Plan (a deferred compensation plan as provided under Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.) This is a supplemental retirement savings plan that allows for the investment of tax-deferred contributions into a variety of investment options.
Flex Spending Plan
Eligible employees can also participate in the County’s Flexible Spending plan, a way to set aside a portion of pay, before taxes, to pay for qualifying dependent care or medical expenses.

Leave Sharing
The County’s leave sharing program allows employees to donate accumulated vacation leave credits to a qualified fellow employee who has a serious personal illness or injury.
