Job Description
Responsibilities
Constructs, repairs, and maintains wood, masonry and metal structures such as furniture, equipment, partitions, and other parts of hospital and related buildings.
Constructs, repairs, and maintains brick and drywall.
Constructs, repairs, installs, and maintains wood and metal framework, sub-flooring, sheathing, partitions, floor joints, studding, rafters, molding, paneling, lath, door frames, doors, door hardware, stairs, steps, linoleum, floor tile, base, plastic laminates, ceiling, concrete, cabinets, furniture, window and door glass, and other related items.
Reads blueprints, schematics and related type of drawings and specifications to determine proper layout and accomplishment of assigned tasks. Calculates and estimates quantity of materials, supplies, and time necessary to accomplish assigned tasks.
Primarily performs carpentry tasks that are related to projects of work that is broad in scope.
Performs assigned tasks with either hand or power tools and in accordance with written or oral instructions.
Completes sections of service requests, work requests, and/or project forms such as time and date started, time and date completed, and materials used.
May perform minor plumbing and electrical tasks, i.e., remove conduit and electrical wiring in demolition and renovations. Install boxes, conduit piping for preliminary building under instruction of Electrician and Supervisor.
May instruct other personnel in education of job and tool safety and the field of carpentry and may provide direction to Carpenter II.
Loads and unloads stock, tools, and supplies from vehicles.
Selects stock, tools, and supplies for assigned tasks.
Stores stock, tools, and supplies in their assigned location.
Operates vehicle as required and maintains a maximum/minimum stock system of supplies and tools on vehicle.
Performs first echelon of maintenance to vehicle such as checking and adding oil, gas, air, and water; cleans both interior and exterior.
Maintains work area in a safe and orderly manner.
Maintains on-going knowledge of applicable codes pertaining to hospitals and the construction field.
May cut keys and repair all type of locks.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND
Must have four (4) years experience in the carpentry field. The four (4) years can be one of the following:
A. A combination of successful completion of one (1) year in a technical school and three (3) years experience in the carpentry field. Each 100 hours of technical school over the required 1300 may be substituted for one-half (1/2) year work experience.
B. Successful completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program in the construction field.
C. Job related experience in functional area totaling 4000 hours.
Technical school(s) must be a combination of a classroom study and shop experience. The course should contain no less than 1300 hours and include such subjects as fundamentals of carpentry, blueprint reading, specification preparation, use of hand and power tools, mathematics, applied science, human relations and mechanical drawing.
Cooperative education program where the student receives on-the-job experience with business and industry may be substituted for shop experience.
