Job Description
Summary:The Woodland Daily Democrat, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a general assignment reporter to cover a wide range of news topics within Woodland and the surrounding area. The primary responsibility is to gather information, conduct interviews, and write news stories on various subjects.What you will do:Conduct research on assigned topics, gather information from various sources, and verify the authenticity of the information obtainedWorking cooperatively with our small team of journalistsInvolve in-person interviews, phone calls, or email correspondenceWrite clear, accurate, and engaging news stories for publication ensuring that the stories are well-structured, coherent, and adhere to the organization’s editorial standards and guidelinesMeet tight deadlines and deliver news stories on time; two byline stories per dayWork efficiently under pressure, especially in the case of breaking news situationsCover specific beats or areas of interest, such as politics, crime, education, health, or entertainmentBuild relationships within the community to identify important issues and storiesAttend public events and meetings to stay informed about local developmentsBe adaptable and open to learning new skills and toolsWhat you will bring:Journalism experience, AP style knowledge and the ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topicsStrong writing and communication skills; spelling and grammar skills requiredExperience working with various technologies for the position including PC laptops, digital cameras and recording equipmentGood people skills are necessary for conducting interviews with sourcesBachelor’s degree preferred; experience in a professional journalism newsroom preferredExcellent research and investigative abilitiesAbility to work independently and as part of a teamMultimedia skills, including photo and video editing, are often preferredPrevious experience in reporting or internships with media organizations is a plusValid driver’s license and reliable transportation is requiredThe hourly wage is $16.50 – $17.50. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
