Job Description

Job Description:

Giants Beat Reporter

We are seeking a news- and enterprise-driven journalist to cover the San Francisco Giants. The job requires daily news and game coverage that comes with reporting on an MLB team in an extremely competitive media market.

What will you do?

  • Be the daily authority on the Giants, from their play on the field, to the stories from the clubhouse, to the workings of the front office.
  • As part of a digital news organization that follows best practices for serving our audience, you would report and immediately publish news to our site, newsletters and off-platform products with high-quality headlines and meta data.
  • In addition to covering any team breaking news, on game days you can expect to do pregame news and notes, any in-game updates (such as a significant injury or ejection), a brief game recap and working the clubhouse for the best stories.
  • Work with the Chronicle’s senior baseball reporters and columnists to expand our reach on the Bay Area’s baseball teams.
  • Work alongside editors to determine what stories are worth pursuing beyond the daily turn, and formulate plans for pushing them forward.
  • Partner with our audience team to determine the best strategy and tactics for publishing your work.
  • Beyond conventional news stories, be ready to produce journalism in alternative digital story formats requiring new ways of thinking about serving your readers.
  • Be a face of our organization by representing the Chronicle on television, radio and podcasts when requests for experts on the Giants arise.

What will it take to be successful?

This is a cornerstone beat for the sports department (and the Chronicle as a whole) and takes a unique drive, sense for news and ability to write and report. To be successful, this reporter must:

  • Develop sourcing within the Giants’ organization and across MLB to keep the Chronicle on top of the news in a competitive environment.
  • Write with clarity and authority, avoiding sports jargon.
  • Have at least three to five years’ experience on an MLB, pro or major college beat, preferably at another major news organization.
  • Have expertise with social media, both in terms of promoting content and engaging audience.
  • Work collaboratively with editors, other reporters, photographers, the audience team and the design and graphics journalists to tell impactful stories across platforms that attract and retain subscribers.
  • Be detail-oriented, with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks in a digital environment.

What skills will the perfect candidate possess?

  • An understanding of how the audience consumes news across all digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with using advanced baseball statistics in stories for a mainstream audience.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
