West Virginia University Health Science Center is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Temporary Graphic Arts Designer with the Department of Ophthalmology
About the Opportunity
The graphic arts designer bridges the gap between science and art, helping to visually communicate complex scientific concepts and information to a broad audience. Also create visual content for various digital and print media and design educational projects for the WVU School of Medicine.
What you’ll do:
The primary responsibility and duty are communicating scientific concepts and information visually through illustrations, diagrams, and other visual media. You may work in various fields, such as biology, medicine, geology, or engineering.
Some specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with researchers or educators to understand the scientific concepts to be illustrated.
- Conducting research and gathering reference materials to ensure accurate and detailed illustrations.
- Using various traditional and digital illustration techniques to create visually appealing and scientifically accurate illustrations.
- Reviewing and revising illustrations based on feedback from clients or colleagues.
- Staying up-to-date with current scientific research and advancements in illustration techniques and technology.
Length of Assignment: Approximately 8 months
Pay Grade: 15
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in graphic design, media arts, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two (2) years graphic design and relevant work experience
- Typically need a combination of artistic skills and scientific knowledge. Some standard qualifications and skills that are desirable for a scientific illustrator include:
- Strong artistic abilities: This includes skills in drawing, painting, and digital media, as well as an understanding of color theory, composition, and design principles.
- Knowledge of scientific concepts: A solid foundation in the sciences, including biology, anatomy, and geology, is essential for accurately communicating scientific information through illustrations.
- Attention to detail: Scientific illustrations must be accurate and detailed, requiring high precision and attention to detail.
- Require strong communication skills, which must communicate effectively with researchers, educators, and other stakeholders to understand their needs and objectives and ensure that the illustrations accurately convey the intended information.
- Require excellent technical skills: Familiarity with illustration software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, as well as knowledge of digital imaging techniques, can be beneficial for producing high-quality scientific illustrations.
