We want you, apply and work with us today!The Laboratory of Immunogenetics and Transplantation (LIT) is the support laboratory for the local transplant programs. LIT serves Oregon Health & Science University transplant programs (kidney, heart, pancreas, liver and bone marrow), the VA transplant program (kidney, pancreas, liver), Legacy Health Systems combined transplant programs (kidney & pancreas), Providence Hospital (heart) and Cascade Life Alliance (CLA), an OPO. The LIT provides clinical and investigative functions, the primary purpose being to ascertain optimum donor and recipient combinations and optimum immunosuppressive regimens.The Laboratory Section Coordinator provides coordination of daily operations, testing, development, reporting (OHSU & UNOS), communicating to all service sections, quality control and waitlist management, assisting with instrument and software upgrades, and helps to maintain accuracy of all written procedures. The Lab Section Coordinator utilizes their technical expertise in HLA to support the Histocompatibility technologists which perform laboratory tests including; ABO blood typing, HLA tissue typing, antibody screening and identification, and flow cytometric and virtual crossmatching between recipients and potential donors.Additionally, the Lab Section Coordinator is the point person in the absence of the manager or technical director.Function/Duties of PositionCoordination of Operations:

  • Notify the departmental leaders of any technical issues concerning the lab, assess the issues and make recommendations.
  • Review test results to ensure accuracy.
  • Generate reports for transplant recipients (solid organ case, crossmatches, verification typing) and donors.
  • Monitor tests TAT and STAT requests.
  • Provides supervision for the lab when manager and technical director are absent.

Histocompatibility And Immunogenetics Testing * Technical knowledge of test result interpretation and reporting.

  • Evaluate patient profiles and Histocompatibility test results to determine a patient’s acceptability as a transplant candidate.
  • Use a high degree of technical judgement to determine the most appropriate tests to perform.

Research and Development

  • Histocompatibility testing is an evolving science which must be monitored closely. Participation in the development and testing of new technologies is required.
  • Validation of software updates, utility updates, and report template updates.
  • Participate in new staff orientation.
  • Provide educational overview to transplant coordinators from all transplant centers.

Communications

  • Provide assistance to providers, coordinators, patients, CLA, Buckeye, and transplant centers as needed.
  • Research special test requests that are not the norm.
  • Collate research information and participate in discussions with the department directors to determine the best patient care options.
  • Provide technical interpretation of test results to physicians or other health professionals.

Organization of Specimen, Testing and Records

  • Organize patient testing schedules and notify staff of stat or urgent requests.
  • Assists accessioners to ensure proper testing is ordered.
  • Billing.
  • Data and record management to ensure maximum efficiency and accuracy.
  • Updates lab procedures as needed.

Quality Management

  • Analyze quality control parameters and sets limits. Review quality control records and formulate a course of action if results fall outside set limits.
  • Make decisions as to the validity of patient results based on QC results and standard policies.
  • Participate in Quality Assessment and Improvement programs for all services according to the Hospital Quality Management Policies.
  • Participate in internal and external proficiency testing.
  • Perform direct observed annual technologist competencies for certain tests.
  • Perform weekly QC of waitlist in UNET vs HistoTrac.
  • Make corrections as necessary to waitlist errors and communicate with the transplant coordinators when a discrepancy is discovered.
  • Complete post-transplant data entry to complete Tiedi reports in UNET system.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, or other science.
  • Four years of experience in a clinical laboratory performing a variety of standardized testing and examination procedures with increasing responsibilities and involvement in complex projects.
  • General knowledge of Federal regulations and inspection agency standards governing Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics
  • General knowledge of Federal regulations and inspection agency standards governing traditional Clinical Pathology tests.
  • General knowledge of theory, interpretation and application of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics testing.
  • General knowledge of general laboratory terminology, techniques, principles, and procedure.
  • General knowledge of the operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • General knowledge of, and personal skill in application of, information management and personal computer applications.
  • General knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, immunology, immunogenetics and microbiology.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Certification as MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), MB(ASCP), CHT(ABHI) or CHS (ABHI).
  • Certification must be maintained, and depending on date of training, different continuing education requirements will apply.
  • Valid driver’s license.

  • The work schedule is dayshift, Monday to Friday. Traveling between laboratories and sites by stairs, elevator, tram, shuttle or other means; exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical hazards; wearing glove and other personal protective equipment for long periods of time.
  • Ability to sit or stand and work on a computer for up to 8 hours a day, ability to carry and lift up to 30 lbs, ability to bend, reach and carry as required for assigned tasks. Ability to utilize laboratory equipment, computers and standard office equipment.
