Laboratory Technologist, Bacteriology, Biomedical & Diagnostic Sciences
College of Veterinary MedicineThe College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Laboratory Technologist 1, Bacteriology, located within the Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences department. The primary purpose of this position is to learn and perform routine microbiological procedures on clinical veterinary specimens in the course of diagnostic testing or clinical research.After training period, will be required to be on a rotation schedule for working Saturday morning and University holidays.QualificationsTypical Responsibilities:
- Performs sample set up for routine microbiology cultures
- Evaluates cultures for the presence of bacteria
- Provides identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens
- Performs gram staining and interpretation
- Documents results on laboratory worksheets and enters results in hospital computer system
- Performs antimicrobial susceptibility test
- Communicates with clinicians, staff, and students as needed
- Participates in quality control activities related to testing
- Supports laboratory staff in preparing protocols
- Maintains laboratory equipment
- Assists with biohazard disposal/cleaning and autoclaving
- Prepares culture media
- Participates in research and scholarly activities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:
- Basic knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, or related science
- Must have good communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Must be able to operate basic laboratory equipment or be willing to learn operation
- Willing to learn complex assays and novel computer systems and equipment
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or another laboratory science. Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 year experience in a diagnostic laboratory
The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.
