POSITION SUMMARY

This position increases the visibility of the University of Tennessee Libraries by determining the best way to communicate visual content. Creates content by synthesizing ideas and information to communicate content visually. Develops original, creative content for Libraries’ fine press publications, print and electronic publications, and websites, and electronic media. This content is for large promotional campaigns and projects as well as for one-off design needs. Designs lay-out and production details and communicates those to the rest of the team. Plans and produces graphic design and production details for all library publications and other graphic materials. This includes Hodges Library, DeVine Music Library, Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library, and the UT Press. Is responsible for developing original design ideas, layouts, and incorporating illustrations or photography into designs accounting for copyright and other considerations. Consults with individuals and groups to discuss ideas, make changes, negotiate budgets and set deadlines for production. Oversees and approves the end product. Prepares specifications for designs produced in a printed format and is responsible for aligning libraries image with UT branding guidelines.

Provides work direction to students and others involved in design projects. Performs other related duties as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops original, creative content for Libraries’ fine press publications, print and electronic publications, and websites, and electronic media.
  • Works independently to plan graphic design and production for all library publications and other graphic materials.
  • Must meet deadlines of Marketing and Communications team which can be last minute or require work outside of regularly scheduled hours
  • Develops design ideas, layouts, and incorporates illustrations or photography into designs accounting for copyright and other considerations
  • Consults with individuals and groups to discuss ideas, make changes, and set deadlines for production.
  • Prepares and executes computer layout for projects and designs, prepares, and manipulates images for digital and print use
  • Provides work direction to students and others involved in design projects
  • Evaluation
  • Participates in the long-range planning and production of the University Libraries publications programs
  • Consults with Marketing and Communications Departments and/or Libraries Administration to discuss ideas, note any alterations, budget limitations, and deadlines before beginning production of materials
  • Analyzes and interprets the requirements for the design and production of a wide range of publications that meet Libraries’ development, public relations, and exhibit needs
  • Researches and analyzes appropriate background materials to advise clients and to provide an accurate final design
  • Coordination
  • Prepares specifications for quotes from vendors and oversees production of products with outside vendors including working with printers on specifications and estimates
  • Maintains print and digital files that account for versioning and other changes to projects
  • Responsible for aligning libraries designs with UT branding guidelines and applies the university’s branding guidelines to all library communications
  • Advise clients on the correct use of the University’s branding, making certain it is present on all communications that represent the libraries.
  • Performs other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field
  • Five of more years of experience in graphic design

· Knowledge of an ability to employ established methods, principles, concepts, and procedures related to visual communication and graphic design

· Possession of creative flair, versatility, conceptual/visual ability and originality

· Must be flexible in meeting deadlines

· Demonstrable graphic design skills with a strong portfolio

· Ability to interact, communicate and present ideas

· Knowledge of industry leading software and technologies (In Design, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc)

· Highly proficient in all aspects of design

· Ability to manage time, costs and deadlines

Preferred

· Experience working in higher education environment

· Advanced knowledge of graphic design software, such as Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Illustrator

· Ability to translate client needs into executable designs

· Ability to create original concepts and images through drawing or sketches

· Exemplary personal computer skills

· Basic knowledge of web accessibility standards

· Experience creating print-based materials

· Web design production process and project management skills
