Newsperson (Race & Ethnicity Reporter)

Company

The Associated Press

Job Description

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world’s population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press is seeking a talented, enthusiastic reporter and proven self-starter to cover the rich and distinct experience of the more than 64 million people who make up the United States’ Hispanic and Latino communities, the nation’s largest racial and ethnic minority. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.

Responsibilities: In this role, you should be comfortable writing about all facets of Latino life, from politics to arts and culture. You should be ready to respond to breaking news or to spot trends, and you should also be able to think non-traditionally about the beat and beyond common themes like immigration and the border.

While your primary assignment will be covering Latino affairs, you will also be an integral part of The Associated Press’ Race & Ethnicity team and be expected to contribute generally to the work.

This reporter should currently be based in or willing to relocate to Texas, Southern California or another mutually agreeable location with a large Latino population. Significant travel will also be part of the role.

Required Qualifications:

At least one year of full-time journalism experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk. This is an early career job with significant potential for growth.

A proven track record of breaking news and identifying smart, innovative stories that people respond to.

We’re also looking for a reporter who is:

Passionate about putting people at the center of stories

Comfortable writing spot news, features, profiles and analysis

An idea machine, taking a piece of data or a thread of a story and following it to where it leads

Able to write about complex topics in a manner that can be easily understood by broad audiences

Interested in and excited about telling stories in alternative ways

Comfortable working across all formats and collaborating from a story’s inception

Able to drive stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.

Dedicated to pursuing innovative and inclusive coverage that maintains AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

Other qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English and Spanish.

Flexible thinking, organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities each day.

A willingness to work any shift, including nights and weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

How to apply: Please apply with a single document that includes your resume, examples of writing/editing and a memo describing your vision for the role.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use your application to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $66,657 – $80,714 contingent on experience and other job-related factors. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.

This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.

Application Deadline: January 19, 2024 @ 11:59 PM ET

AP seeks to build an inclusive organization grounded in respect for differences. We support all aspects of diversity and provide equal employment opportunity to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or status as a veteran.
