WUNC Youth Reporting is opening up our highly competitive and award-winning youth radio journalism training program to youth reporting alumni, high school and college students, ages 18-25. Black, Latinx Indigenous, and all students of color (BI-POC) are encouraged to apply. An intermediate level of journalism experience is required. Participants will learn and sharpen skills in radio journalism, interact with our diverse group of youth reporting alumni in various stages of their careers, build relationships with youth across the state of North Carolina, and connect to a platform that will amplify their work and voice. Selected participants will have the chance to produce a radio story for broadcast.As a participant, you will gain access to training sessions along with that will expand your understanding of the reporting process. In addition to focusing on pitching and editing for a feature story, we will hone in on other elements of the news reporting process from digital journalism to long-form storytelling. Along with receiving one-on-one training from WUNC’s Director of New Talent and Community partnerships, you will also have the chance to interact with journalism instructors, and professional reporters.The program will begin Monday, June 3rd, and run until Friday, August 9th. Participants will be paid $17/hour and should designate 10-15 hours a week to work towards a production deadline. Students are expected to join every training session. Students will work in a hybrid format, with daily meetings occurring Monday-Thursday from 12pm to 4pm. There will be multiple opportunities for in-person training at our Durham studio location; this is where we will skill-build and get hands-on with our stories.Applications will be open until April 15th. Interviews will be held from April 22nd – May 3and our Welcome Orientation will launch on Monday, June 3 at 4:00pm.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
